Oval Cat Bed

This bed can be opened up and used as a mat, or for easier laundering, or pulled taunt so that it’s side come up to form walls.

Cut - oval at least 24 inches wide.  I made a template out of paper and fold my material (flannel sheet) in half and line up on the fold.

Fold material in half.  Place pattern on fold.  Cut 1 for top and a slightly smaller one for bottom.

Cut outside of top and bottom 1 inch beyond the pattern

Mark fabric (or tissue paper) for the inside oval which is about 6 inches from outer edges.

Lay the smaller top over the larger bottom.  Position off-center, so that there is slightly more material on one longer side.  This side will be the higher back of the bed.

Sew the inner circle, leaving a 3 or 4 inch opening for stuffing.

I purchase pillows from Walmart for the stuffing for $2.50.

Stuff the inner oval and stitch the opening closed.

After I finish stuffing the center oval, I stitch in the middle of it for 3 or 4 inches to keep the stuffing from bunching up.  (You can sew a pattern here.  A heart, a circle etc.)

Line up edges together and pin.

Gathering the larger bottom layer to be even with the smaller top if necessary.

Stitch top and bottom layers together about 2 inches from the edge, all the way around, leave an opening of 3 or 4 inches in the back, for inserting the stuffing.

Lay 93 inche long ribbon (or cord) as close to the stitching as possible.

Fold the bottom in and the top edges in

  and then together.

Pin

Stitch as close to the edge as possible, making sure the ribbon (or cord) inside is not caught in any stitches.

Stuff the outer oval.

The ribbon should move freely inside.

Sew, tie or tie a knot in the individual or ribbons so that they will no be accidentally pulled inside.

 Stitch the opening closed.

Pull the ribbon taunt to bring up the sides, and tie in a bow.

Insert cat.
